Coron Adventure: Getaway from the city

Coron Island, located at the northern tip of Palawan in the Philippines and about 170 nautical miles southwest of Manila, is known for several Japanese shipwrecks World War II vintage. The area around the wrecks have pleasant rock formations which provide for excellent snorkeling opportunities, with underwater visibility extending up to 80 feet.

The water is usually calm, with almost no current. Coron is one of the most visited destinations for wreck diving in the Philippines.
Divesites around Coron include also many different reef divesites and the famous "Günter´s Cave". Also known as Cathedral Cave as, during the right time of the day, the sun throws a beam of light through a hole in the cave-ceiling, illuminating the inside. It is possible to surface in the cave, as the hole in the cave-ceiling allows fresh air to enter. The cave is named after Günther Bernert. He was part of the first dive-group exploring the cave after hearing from local fishermen about the existence of the cave.

Wreck Diving Sites in Coron Bay include the Irako Wreck, Okikawa Maru Wreck, Akitsushima Wreck, Kogyo Maru Wreck, Olympia Maru Wreck, Kyokuzan Maru Wreck, East Tangat Gunboat Wreck (real name of the ship, Teru-Kaze Maru, was recently discovered by a group of Dutch divers, who spent a couple of days digging into bottom sand around the stern), Nanshin Maru Wreck, Lusong Gunboat Wreck and Skeleton Wreck.
The aquatic views from the sunken Japanese warships off Coron Island are listed in Forbes Traveler Magazine’s top 10 best scuba diving sites in the world.

This was technically my first trip to Visayas and I was so excited in going . Being a light packer that I am, I only brought the essentials for this adventure. REMEMBER: Before traveling to a particular place, be sure you get ample information about the place, not to mention your plans and itineraries. I'm going to share our itineraries and hopefully this might help a lot for those people who would plan their vacation there.

We took a Philippine Airlines flight to Busuanga Airport (check for flight information and ticket prices at
www.philippineairlines.com). This took at least 45-50 minutes travel time. After landing at Busuanga, you wont be having problems in getting a shuttle service to Coron town proper. A comfortable hotel van can take you to your preferred accommodation place for only 150php/head. The ride will take approximately 45minutes from the airport. We opted to stay in this dive resort called Sea Dive resort which is located just beside the fisherman's wharf in Coron town proper (for more information on accommodations, check their site at www.seadiveresort.com).

Since it was the first time we visited the place, budget wise, we didn't think about saving more money than usual. So either check other places that would suit your budget or try sea dive's accommodations. In order to tour the whole islands, you would need to hire a boatman to take you to the spots this place has to offer. TAKE NOTE: If you are looking for a Boracay-like place, Coron is not for you :) The price for the boatman varies from the tour package you would want to have. Coron Island package, Culion Island Tour & Snorkeling. (For more information on rates and prices for tour packages, you can send an email to: budekisworld@gmail.com).

Places to visit are:
  • Kayangan Lake
  • Coron Island Beaches
  • Blue Lagoon
  • Mount Tapyas
  • Culion Island
  • Snorkeling
Meals are cheap if you buy it for yourself in the wet market. Have it cooked on your resort for a minimal cooking charge. We spent 4 days touring around the place. Be sure to carefully plan your day so no time is wasted. Biggest money output would only be the boat trip and accommodations. Best to go to Coron is by bunches so you can share and divide the expenses with your friends and families.

Any questions are welcome. Feel free to email budekisworld@gmail.com
